The chemical industry in the region has received a funding boost.
|
Regional development agency One NorthEast has announced that it is to inject £1.65 million into the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC), which should ensure its growth over the next three years.
NEPIC provides the region's pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical and support companies with a chance to share best practice and also allows members to work together to generate and attract investment.
Ian Williams, director of business and industry at One NorthEast, said: "The process industry is making a massive contribution to the region's economy, with 20 per cent of the UK's production capacity based here and five of the world's leading speciality chemicals companies with significant assets here."
He added that the sector is expected to grow by 50 per cent to 13.3 billion by 2015, creating 12,000 new jobs in the process.
Earlier this month, it was announced that NEPIC will be working with North East Biofuels to deliver the region's first Biofuels Strategy.
