North-east 'could become a biofuel hub'

The north-east of England could become a hub for the biofuels industry with the creation of new partnership aimed at laying the ground work for such a scenario.
North East Biofuels (NEB) and the North East Process Industries Cluster (NEPIC) are working together to create the delivery body for the region's first Biofuels Strategy.

One NorthEast's director for business and industry, Ian Williams, said: "North-east England has the potential to be one of the only European hubs capable of supplying the global market and attracting major investment - but it is still a young industry."

He added that strong leadership and expertise is needed to help guide the region's biofuel sector towards success.

This will involve bringing together everyone connected to the industry from farmers and crusher operators to national policy makers, he concluded.

In related news, the Centre for Process Innovation and the Centre of Excellent for Nano, Micro and Photonic Systems announced a merger aimed at reinforcing the region's position as a leading innovator in the UK processing sector.
