Medical insurance 'attracts and retains workers'

County Durham firms looking to attract and retain good quality staff might want to invest in medical insurance for their workers, it has been claimed.
According to Jonathon French, spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers, including such a product in a benefits package is very attractive to workers.

He said: "In an increasingly competitive labour market, employers are using add-ons, like offering private medical insurance to ensure that they can recruit and retain the best quality staff."

Firms that do invest in medical insurance could also reap other benefits as workers may return to work quicker as they should receive a higher level of care than they would have otherwise.

This can also have a knock-on effect which will improve the overall productivity of the wider economy, he concluded.

Research by the ABI shows that more than six million people in the UK are covered by private medical insurance.

It also found that a further 1,136,000 people are covered by healthcare trust arrangements.
