Distribution centre 'could create 1,000 jobs'

A distribution centre has been proposed for the Aycliffe Industrial Estate, in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, reports the Northern Echo.
If approved, the centre could bring over 1,000 jobs to the area and would be the country's greenest warehouse development.

Merchant Place, a developer based in London, is behind the proposed project and the company has said that the site could be ready as early as next year.

Andrew Gale, a planning consultant to Merchant Place, said: "Hopefully, we will get the outline planning permission by summer and then we can take it to market.

"We will then submit a detailed planning application in the autumn."

Tom Robinson, a landscape design architect said that the land had been set aside for "employment purposes".

He said: "The idea now is to develop a site that will give the employment that is needed, but will do so in a sustainable way."

Meanwhile, a £250 million ethanol refinery is to be built in the north-east, bringing hundreds of new jobs.

To be built at Teesside's Wilton site, the plant will be built by Ensus and will be the largest investment in the area in the last 17 years.
