£750k skills centre for County Durham

It has been announced this week that a local skills centre in County Durham is due to receive funds of £750,000.
It is anticipated that the funds will go towards developing the vehicle industry's first training and apprenticeship scheme in the region, reports further education website FEnews.

The learning centre, Skilltec, currently offers vocational qualifications in aspects of the motor industry such as vehicle repair, painting and panel work and estimating.

Skilltec is set to benefit from the personal investment of David Blenkinsop, managing director of the Durham branch of Body Work Direct.

Mr Blenkinsop is said to be hoping that the venture will help tackle the current skills shortage in the vehicle industry.

He commented: "The industry suffers from a shortage of skills and we are committed to helping meet market demands by turning out highly-skilled, well-qualified people.

"We are determined to maintain the highest possible standards at Skilltec and are providing state-of-the-art facilities, highly-qualified trainers and paying apprentices double the usual rate."
